History: Wanda at Marvel Wikia and Wikipedia, or read below:Wanda and her twin brother Pietro were born to a human, Magda the Witch of Wundagore, and Erik Lehnsherr, a mutant with powers of magnetism. They spent the first seven to eight years of their lives in the mountains of the Balkans before their father left and took the twins with him.
Their father, Erik, was friends with another mutant by the name Charles Xavier, who had also left his wife behind, as well as his son. Together, the two worked together to build what was known as the Brotherhood of Mutants. Their intentions were to found a place that would be a safe haven for mutants, who were at the time actively persecuted by the governments of many countries. Some countries, like America, even went so far as to build robots called Sentinels that would hunt down any with the mutant gene and kill them. Erik and Charles hoped to form a community where mutants could live apart from the human race.
In search of the perfect place to build, they stumbled upon the Savage Lands when they crashed down onto the island. While there were tribes of humans already there, Charles was able to convince the people that they came in peace and could exist without conflict alongside each other.
Wanda and Pietro came into their mutant powers eventually, Pietro discovering he could move at accelerated speeds, and Wanda learning that she had both her mother's magic as well as the mutant ability to affect reality itself. Their father held no small amount of disdain for his son's ability, deeming it weak and useless, and Wanda learned to have a great deal of fear about her own new abilities.
One day, Erik decided to send a Brotherhood mutant by the name of Wolverine out to follow the twins. The mutant's instructions were to kill Pietro, and Wolverine might very well have, as he got so far as to stab Pietro in the chest with his adamantium claws...however he didn't count on Wanda's reaction. Out of fury and a need to protect her brother, Wanda lost control of her powers and summoned dinosaurs to the Savage lands. They chased Wolverine off, leaving Wanda to tend to Pietro and confess her concern that these powers of hers were so great that she wasn't sure she could entirely control them, and worried that they might one day control her.
Time marched on, and soon a vast and sprawling city was erected in the Savage Lands. Erik took credit for the sudden influx of dinosaurs, claiming that they were a result of his experiments with genetic mutation. Meanwhile, Wanda and Pietro continued to do everything they could to please their father, a man they much admired and looked up to despite the fact that he himself was quite honestly the most horrible father in existence. He belittled them, called them stupid, told them to shut up, and had no qualms with manipulating them to do what he pleased. He had their loyalty and devotion, and saw fit to dangle his approval out of arms reach to keep them trying to even come close to attaining his good favor.
All the while, their father continued to make plans for the future of the mutant race. With a zealot's enthusiasm, he gathered mutants to him and spoke of the proactive steps they could take to earn the respect of the human beings who were a lesser race. Most mutants agreed with his plans, eager to dish out violence in return for the things that had been done to them and for those of their fellow mutants who had been killed. Not all were in favor, of course. Charles, in favor of a more peaceful approach, held the support of a majority of the telepaths in the Brotherhood, and even went so far as to hold secret communications with the American and British governments. He slowly began to make his stance known, and both he and Erik fought over their differing views.
Eventually, Charles made a break for it along with several other mutants. Wanda and Pietro entered their father's library to find him spraweled on the floor and claiming that he'd been attacked. Both of the twins wished to seek vengeance on behalf of their father, but he told them no, and instead sent a metal spike after Charles that impaled him through his back. Charles survived, not that Erik, now calling himself Magneto, knew.
Without Charles and his mutant followers to stand in the way, Magneto put his plans into action. He slaughtered most of the tribes of humans on the Savage Lands, and began sending mutants on terrorist missions. For example, they kidnapped the President's daughter, and set explosions in London to sabotage plans to build a fleet of Sentinels for England. Both Wanda and Pietro were instrumental in these missions, though the first failed due to the involvement of the X-Men, a group of teen mutants organized and trained by Charles. The second mission was a success, in part due to the involvement of a former X-Men, Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops.
Wanda didn't hesitate to make her interest in Scott known. Not only did she get up close and personal with him, slinging an arm around his shoulders or inviting him to poetry readings, she even went so far as to mention to her father that she intended to seduce Scott after said poetry reading.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) for the Brotherhood, the poetry reading never came to pass. Before it could even begin, the Brotherhood's city was attacked by sentinels. Both Wanda and Pietro did their best to protect who they could, but there were casualties despite their best efforts. The only thing that brought the attack to an end was the involvement of their father who quickly took control of the robots and reprogrammed them to attack beings without the mutant gene, as opposed to those with it.
Seeking retaliation, Magneto left with the reprogrammed sentinels, claiming he would kill every human in America. Cyclops, coming to his senses, got back in touch with Professor X to issue a warning and left to his jet to try and do something about the threat. Both Wanda and Pietro tried to tell him he wouldn't be able to get there in time, to which Cyclops replied that he might not, but he still had to try and do something and oh yeah, wasn't Pietro quick enough to get there in time and do something?
"Isn't it about time you stood up to your freakin' dad for once in your life anyway, you little snot?"
Yes, he has a way with words.
Just as Wanda's father was standing over the naked President of the United States, fully intending to execute him live on television, Charles interferred. He and the X-Men did their best to fight him, to stop him and protect the President, and for a moment it seems as if all is lost and it will first be Professor X killed on-screen. Wolverine comes to his aid, but being filled with metal he can only hold his own for so long before Magneto is able to take him down. It isn't until Pietro runs onto the scene that the X-Men gain the upper hand. Using his superspeed, Pietro runs past his father and steals the helmet that protects his susceptible mind from the probings of telepathic mutants.
"That's what happens when you treat someone like dirt beneath your fingernails for their entire life, Father."
Charles takes advantage of the moment and gets inside Magneto's head and while there, effectively turns his former friend into a super magnet. Erik attracts all kinds of metal things to him, things even as large as buses and sentinel heads. Surrounded by debris like a giant katamari star, Magneto is lifted by Charles' telepathy up into the sky, at which point the entire city is treated to the sight of him exploding.
After the death of their father, Wanda and Pietro take over the Brotherhood of mutants. By Charles' suggestion, they bend the methods of the group toward exposing corruption in the government and acting on behalf of their mutant brethren who are still imprisoned and experimented on by government and paramilitary groups. They seem to do well for a while, so much so that during a mission Wanda simultaneously deactivates twenty to thirty missiles just before they are launched.
The twins don't have their father's flair, however, nor do they have the unquestioning loyalty of all of the mutants. Displeased with the change in goals and methods, slow rumblings of mutiny begin to rise. They're unaware of the discontent of their organization, however, and in addition to that, unaware of what really happened in Washinton D.C. with their father.
You see, Charles hadn't actually blown Magneto up. No, somehow he'd pulled some sort of flim flam and instead more or less lobotomized Erik into thinking he was a human 4th grade teacher. Word got around through the X-Men, and one day Beast let the news slip to the Blob, who had been posing as an underwear model that Beast would flirt with via the internet.
The rest of the Brotherhood mobilized to rescue Erik and used their telepaths to free his mind, all without making the twins aware of their plans.
Magneto came back to himself with all of his unyielding fury and violence, killing the ape-mutant responsible for freeing him, and when asked if he would be as forgiving of his twin children as he was the rest of the Brotherhood for following them, he had this chilling message:
"No, I'm afraid I'm less forgiving of the twins, Blob. Their treachery and incompetence must be made a strict example of, and truth be told, they'll expect nothing less form me...Just tell them Daddy's home, eh?"
With the American government aware of Charles' involvement in the hiding of Erik Lehnsherr, the X-Men were forced to go into hiding, and having gotten the news of their father's return, the twins did as well. Seeking safety, they approached the head of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury, who was also in charge of a team of people called the Ultimates. The Ultimates were essentially what we know today as the Avengers, "a strike force of government-sponsored metahumans when the President of the United States approves a new defense budget to combat the growing risk of the U.S. being attacked by supervillains" (Wikipedia). At the time, the team in this universe consisted of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Bruce Banner (aka The Hulk), Hawkeye, and Black Widow, with the addition of Janet Pym, codename Wasp, and Hank Pym, who later becomes Ant-Man after receiving an infusion of his wife's blood.
Of course, the Ultimates had no interest in simply protecting the twins, but rather expected their help in dealing with their father and the Brotherhood. It was in the middle of giving what knowledge they could that the lights went out and explosions sound outside their conference room. Wanda exclaimed that it was their father out there, and Captain America gave orders that she and Pietro face him with he and Thor, in an attempt to protect the more vulnerable humans in their midst.
Both Captain America and Thor do their best to defend themselves and others against Magneto, but with both wielding weapons of metal they were not as effective as they needed to be. With both of them taken out, Cap urged the twins to take their father out, but the twins froze. Magneto rightfully explained that his children could never take up arms against him, too fearful of the man to even try. Instead they stepped forward when prompted to accept his punishment.
Magneto, never one to simply let his actions speak for him, explained that they had to know why they were to be punished. Pietro answered that he thought it was because he took his father's helmet and allowed Charles Xavier take control of Magneto's mind, but he was quickly disabused of that notion. Instead, Magneto explained that it was because they had taken the Brotherhood, his organization, and neutered it and turned it into "a stooge for Homo-Sapien." With his powers, Magneto then lifted too rifles, human weapons, and raised them toward his children. Wanda tried to stand in front of Pietro and plead with her father to punish her as well if he was to punish her brother, to which her father replied that he would.
"Oh, but your punishment is quite straightforward, my little Wanda. You get to watch."
Helpless, Wanda watched as Magneto fired the guns at kneecaps of his speedster son. It is by far, one of the most horrible and traumatizing things that he has done to them. Magneto leaves the Triskelion, allowing Wanda to see to Pietro. Meanwhile, the Ultimates go after the X-Men and Professor X. They battle it out, and Professor X is taken captive as the rest of the X-Men escape. Magneto remains a free mutant.
It is at this point that Wanda and Pietro truly reached a turning point in their lives. Having gone to the American government to help, they decided to stay on in exchange for their freedom. Working secretly on behalf of S.H.I.E.L.D. gave them some leverage to attempt to better the conditions of mutants or free those being held prisoner. Still to controversial with their public image of being mutant terrorists, they often assistated the Ultimates but well out of the limelight.
It is the Ultimates' fight against the shapeshifting aliens known as Chitauri (1610's version of skrulls) that Wanda and were are able to prove themselves. Though they didn't take on the main opponents of their foes, the twins fought out of sight of the Ultimates. Pietro claimed he moved too quickly for anyone to see how much he helped, and that they should check their video recordings to see he and Wanda in action. The team remained dubious, but nonetheless, their involvement earned them public spots on the Ultimates team, along with both Hawkeye and Black Widow. The twins opted out of attending a celebratory dinner at the White House, still not particularly fond of these teammates who distrust them and are at times outright hostile to them, but the elevation in status was an opportunity for both of them.
Unfortunately, because no one can ever have anything nice forever in the Ultimate Marvel universe, nothing was to last. The media got wind of the fact that the Hulk that killed 300 people in New York City (before Wanda and Pietro joined the team) and was locked up and put through a trial for his crimes.
Later, the Ultimates were told by a man claiming to be Thor's brother that he was in fact an escaped mental patient whose powers came from stolen technology. The Ultimates fought Thor, and Pietro was electrocuted on more than one occasion in his attempt to steal Thor's belt. It's only after Wanda almost had her nose broken and told an exhausted and injured Pietro about her near-miss that his protective nature took over. He stole the belt in one last burst of furious energy. Without his belt, Thor too was locked up. From that point, the Ultimates were involved in a series of foreign affairs, mostly in an attempt to control the nuclear resources of third world countries. Not taking kindly to this, the same countries formed their own superteam, an Anti-American group called the Liberators.
Things only got worse from there. Assassins were went to Hawkeye's home one day, and they killed his wife and three children in front of him. Hawkeye was taken prisoner, and Captain America was framed for the assault. It was revealed that the Black Widow was in fact responsible, having betrayed the Ultimates to the liberators, when she attempted to kill Tony Stark as well. Stark was able to take control of Natasha, but not until after she had already killed his butler Jarvis.
Eventually, the Liberators attacked the Triskelion. Wasp freed Captain America and together they met up with Fury, Hawkeye, and the twins. It was there that they fought the Liberator's forces, Wanda with her hexes and Pietro with his superspeed. During this time Pietro was once more taken down, leaving Wanda to defend him until he got wind of Hawkeye being attacked by the Liberator's speedster. Pietro engaged the woman in a fight too fast for the human eye to seen, and eventually reduced her to bits of body parts when her body couldn't withstand his taking her body to speeds well above Mach 10.
Defeating the Liberators was only winning half the battle, however, for the true mastermind of this entire scheme was...Loki. Yes, Loki, Thor's brother, the trickster god.
It was at this time that Wanda had Her Moment. As Loki claimed that he had done all he could to disrupt peace on earth and start World War Three, that he would now make them suffer all as they never had before, Wanda stepped up and said that she would stop him. Loki, in all of his arrogance asked what on earth she could do when her powers were only that of bending probability. To that, Wanda had a simple reply.
"Oh, I don't know. Increase the odds of someone showing up to kick your ass?"
With a single hex, Wanda summoned Thor from his cell at the Triskelion. Of course, Loki tried to use his illusions on his brother, to make him think that he truly was an escaped mental patient, but Thor was able to snap out of it and get the upper hand on his brother. Thor brought his hammer down directly on Loki's head, but it still wasn't enough to take the trickster god out. Loki then summoned monsters for the Ultimates to fight, and hoards of monster armies. It seemed for a moment as if all would be lost and the Ultimates would be overwhelmed, but just as Loki had more up his sleeve, so did Thor.
Finally proving himself the god he claimed to be, Thor summoned the armies of Asgard on the rainbow road, the bifrost. With their reinforcements, the Ultimates fought as a team to defeat Loki's armies until Thor could finally send his brother packing. In the aftermath, it was Captain America who decided that to truly keep the world safe they would need to be able to act as an independent group, however. Breaking apart from S.H.I.E.L.D., the Ultimates then became reliant on the funds of Tony Stark to keep their group running.
Personality:Characters of the Marvel 1610 universe are very much a product of their environment, and Wanda Lehnsherr is no exception.
She was raised by a man with his own motives closer at heart than his children. To seek his approval and affection, both she and Pietro bent over backwards to please him. Erik, being the Father of the Year that he is, had absolutely no qualms manipulating both of his children toward his ends. As a result, Wanda honed her mutant skills and unquestioningly supported his vision for a world of mutant-supremacy. Having grown up in an isolated community of mutants who believed in everything Magneto said and did, it was no wonder that there was never any outside influence to make her question a damn thing her father did. No, instead she became Daddy's Little Terrorist to the best of her ability.
At times she emulated her father's unadulterated rage and behaved as a zealot as much as he, but Wanda never entirely acquired the same violent ruthlessness that her father possessed. That isn't to say that she didn't have blood on her hands, but her motives were more about supporting her father and gaining his approval more than anything else.
With the initial goal to not only please her father but survive in the environment of the Brotherhood of Mutants, Wanda adapted and changed as she grew up. Gone went the little girl who used to run through the hallways playing with her brother, and in her place came a much altered young woman. Seemingly colder and harder, Wanda had pulled around her a sort of aloofness and unimpressed air she used to both deflect and set down those deemed lesser. And, as what amounted to a princess in her father's kingdom, everyone was lesser than she but Pietro, her equal, and of course, their father who reigned over all.
Of course, there was always more to Wanda than that. In addition to a passion for poetry (her own written and recited in the mutant language Epsilon-Omega), and a lack of shame when it came to sex, the most notable thing about Wanda Lehnsherr is her relationship with her brother. Throughout their changing circumstances and even her own eventually evolved personality, her love and support of her brother remains constant and unshaken.
It is through her interactions with Pietro that we get a glimpse of Wanda as how she might have been if left out of her father's fanatical schemes to take over the world. With him, she smiles, she is physically affectionate, and indeed shows a closeness to her twin that is constantly questioned (not just behind their backs but at times to their face) by those around them. Wanda and Pietro have seemingly gotten used to ignoring the looks and probing jibes, at times responding with a few quick words to imply that the accusations are tired and indeed, none of anyone's business.
These glimpses into Wanda's personality and who she is at her core only continue the longer she and Pietro remain with the Ultimates. Rather than keeping to themselves as often as they used to, both Wanda and Pietro interact more with their teammates out of the office, so to speak. They help Natasha shop for a wedding dress, attend dinner parties at the Bartons' house, and by Wanda's canon point she leaves the team discussing with Pietro her desire to get everyone Christmas gifts that year.
Not only that, but in the comics it's shown that Wanda is more likely to admit to being uncertain or having doubts in her own abilities during emotional or high-pressure situations. In Ultimates second story arc, Wanda is asked to stop several missiles from launching from the Middle East. In such a high-pressure situation with so much at stake and so many things that could go wrong, she stated aloud that she was freaking out and wasn’t sure she could complete her task without mistakes.
When off-duty, Wanda is not someone who talks just to feel included. She has no problem with giving her input or an opinion, however this is provided that Pietro doesn’t speak up first, and that what he says does not cover points she would have made herself. The siblings are at times of the same opinion and Wanda has no issues letting him speak for them both during those times.
Wanda’s working relationship with the Ultimates has become stronger than that with the Brotherhood, and she responds well to Tony’s encouragement during a rare moment of uncertainty, as well as Nick Fury’s direction in the field. She communicates well, clearly and succinctly, even when her concern is divided between the battle at hand and instances in which Pietro has been seriously hurt. It’s with the Ultimates that Wanda is shown acting as an actual team member, capable not just of leading but taking orders from and working with those who are not family and not even mutants.
With those she develops more than a passing acquaintance with, Wanda’s personality can shift more noticeably. Where once she might have been withdrawn and quiet, even judgmental, she might become more coy and outgoing. In a few instances Wanda has been shown to be exceedingly friendly with those who catch her interest.
Still, these new connections do not come easily. Having believed herself to be superior to most everyone for a great deal of her life, she can be more aloof and slow to warm up to others. After all, not only is she a mutant with incredible powers, but she is also well-educated, clever, and fairly cultured as well. Her aloofness, built originally as a defense mechanism against other Brotherhood mutants, remains in place in light of the poor public image she and her brother have. After all, they had not only been willing members of their father's terrorist organization, but led it themselves for a time.
Having gotten close to someone doesn't mean that she's not above manipulating them if the ends justify the means. In one instance, the Ultimates were pit against Thor and their only hope of winning regaining the upper hand was for Pietro to get close enough to steal Thor’s belt. After many failed attempts that left Pietro electrocuted and injured, Wanda played on his protective nature and quick temper to goad him into to one more attempt by telling him that Thor had hurt her and almost broken her nose. Even with the very close relationship she and Pietro enjoy, Wanda sees nothing wrong with playing on her brother's own personality traits and attitudes to effect the reaction she desires. One way or another, if she wants something to happen she will use whatever tool that is at hand to make it happen.
Wanda has her moments of empathy and softer emotions of course, but these displays are rare and not bestowed lightly on others.Of all of the people in her life, Pietro is one of the few that sees Wanda as herself. When they’re just with each other, she’s more open and light-hearted. She’s more given to teasing him and being more outwardly affectionate, as well as relying on him emotionally. Their relationship is very codependent but the dynamic has never been hobbling.
The TL;DR version is that Wanda started out a happy child with magical powers that scared and intimidated her, and a father that came to manipulate and terrify her. His influence warped her into a blindly obedient mutant supremacist until through other circumstances she and Pietro were forced to live outside of the bubble that was their life in the Savage Lands. Through working with the Ultimates she's slowly been evolving into someone closer resembling the girl she once had been. Using a dismissive and judgmental front as a means of defense less and less, Wanda is slowly learning to adjust to what we would consider a normal, everyday life. Well, one that includes fighting chitauri, Norse gods and robots while maintaining a close relationship to her brother (that people get really skeevy about) and slowly growing bonds to other teammates.
As for how she'll handle being in Teleios, there's no doubt that Wanda knows she's done awful, terrible things in her past. She knows she was a terrorist. She knows she was raised as a mutant supremacist and that some of those opinions still linger. She knows that as much as she fights for others as an Ultimate, that means getting her hands dirty. Being part of the Ultimates gave her a chance to make up for her past. She won't be able to deny she has things making up for, though she won't appreciate being separated from her brother or her team.
Powers/Abilities:The nutshell version is that Wanda has both the mutant ability to alter reality on a large scale, as well as magic as inherited from her mother's side of the family. She's trained extensively with use of both gifts, as well as how to fight in hand-to-hand combat as well.
REALITY BENDING AND MAGIC: As a mutant, Wanda has the ability to alter reality through use of hexes which often take the form of “hex orbs” or “hex bolts.” These hexes can alter the probability of something happening, not happening, or changing in other ways, including but not limited to transportation, transformation, etc. Unlike other versions of the Scarlet Witch, Wanda must actually calculate the mathematical probability of what she wants to change. The more unlikely it is to happen naturally, the more complex the mathematical formula must be. Wanda is not only intelligent and knowledgeable of the various formulas needed to calculate the probabilities she uses, but able to do her calculations and utilize her hexes rapidly.
Some examples of changes Wanda has previously effected have included the disabling nuclear missiles before reaching the end of their launch sequence as well as both teleporting/summoning allies or transporting enemies away from a fight. Against other mutants who can alter reality (ie: Longshot), Wanda is more powerful.
In addition to her mutant ability to manipulate probabilities, Wanda also inherited magical abilities from her mother, the Witch of Wundagore. It is with this power that she was able to summon dinosaurs to the defense of both she and her brother against Wolverine. Wanda is not shown to make use of this magic at any other time, and when she summoned dinosaurs it was at a younger age and with less control over this power. As a result, it is my belief that with time she has at the very least gained enough control over her magical ability that these unintentional summonings do not occur.
Wanda is also capable of flying through use of her powers. It is not explained whether or not this is something she gained through her mutant power or her magical ability.
OTHER: Wanda has displayed training in acrobatics as well as hand to hand combat, though generally speaking her fighting style rarely requires that she employ any techniques when her mutant ability is so much more efficient.
Wanda is also multilingual and speaks fluent German and Epsilon-Omega, a mutant language invented by her father.
KNOWN WEAKNESSES: Her ability to bend reality, use magic, and fly are the only abilities she has that are out of the ordinary. Wanda's body is entirely mortal and subject to the same weaknesses and vulnerabilities of any other human. She can be hurt with regular bullets and blades, break bones, get burned, bruised, and hurt in all of the same ways a regular human being can. The only difference is that if she can see it coming, there is the possibility that she can quickly calculate and bend reality to avoid injury.
With regards to her powers, it seems that she is her own worst enemy. Times in which she has failed seem directly attributed to times in which she herself has doubts or uncertainty, or is under great mental or emotional strain.
